Sigma Magic Help Version 15

Paste

Overview

The Paste button is used to copy the data from either the current workbook or an external workbook to your currently active Sigma Magic tool. Note that Paste functionality has been specifically designed for Sigma Magic software and you will not be able to use Paste on other worksheets not created by Sigma Magic software. Besides, not all tools created by Sigma Magic software use the Paste functionality. Sigma Magic Paste functionality is currently available for most tools within Graphs, Stats, and Analytics. main menu

Usage

Use the Paste button to paste the data from a central database or worksheet to specific tools in Sigma Magic. An example of the paste dialog box is shown below. paste input dialog
1
Data File: The file from which the data is being read is displayed at the top. You can either read the data from your current workbook or from another file you specify in the options under Options button in the External Data files tab. If the name of the file listed here is the same as the name of your current workbook, then the data is imported from the same workbook. The software looks through all the worksheets and looks for any tables in that workbook.
2
Browse Button: If you need to change the file from which you want to read the data, click on the Browse button. This will open a file explorer dialog and will let you pick the name of the external data file.
3
Clear Button: If you don't want to use an external data file, click on the Clear Button and the software will only use the current workbook. It will look for all data in tables in the current workbook. If your file does not contain any tables, then no data is available for the Paste operation.
4
User Selection: If data is available in your workbook for Paste, all the available data is shown in the Available Data section. This section contains the row number, the name of the table on which the data is located, the name of the column and the number of rows of data defined in that table. You can also perform a keyword search for the data at the bottom to filter the list of available data in this section.
5
Select Button: Once you pick the row of data you want to select, you can double click on this data to make the selection or click on the Select Button. This will move your selection from the left table to the right table under the Selected Data section. Make sure that the appropriate row within selected data is highlighted as the move will happen to this row on the right.
6
Un Select Button: If you have made an incorrect selection, then you can either double click on the right hand table or click on the Un Select button and that particular selection is cleared.
7
Remember Selection: If you select this checkbox, then the software will remember your selection and the next time you use the Paste Worksheet dialog box on the same or a different tool, it will try to make the same selection for you. This will minimize the searching you would have to perform to locate the data you are interested in.
8
OK Button: Click on the OK button to copy and paste the data you have selected to your worksheet. Note that if the selected data is complete, then the software will automatically call the Compute Outputs for you so that you can immediately see the analysis results. If there is missing data, then you will have to enter this data and manually click on Compute Outputs to generate analysis results.
9
Cancel Button: Click on the Cancel Button to cancel your selection. No data is copied or pasted onto the worksheet.

FAQ

This section contains some frequently asked questions. If you have other questions about this module, please contact technical support.
How do I use the Paste functionality?

Paste can be used to copy the data from a common worksheet (or database) to your current worksheet tool. If you have data centrally located for the project you are working on, you can specify this data under Options>External Data and then use any data contained in this database for all your analysis.

I am unable to see the data column when I use Paste?

If you are sure that your database contains that column, but you don't see that during Paste, it could be due to the fact that its column type does not match the data Sigma Magic is expecting for your current selection. For example, if Sigma Magic is expected numeric data column, it will not display columns that contain text information.

How do I view what is contained in the database?

First determine the source of your data file. If the options specify an external workbook, determine the name of the Excel workbook under Options > External Data and open that file. Note that the worksheet may be hidden, and you may need to unhide it using View > Unhide in order to see that workbook. Look for the worksheet titled "Data Sheet".

What does the [number] mean within the selection when I select a row?

When you select a row from available data, the size of the data set (number of rows in that data) are shown within the parenthesis.

Will Paste retain formatting of the column?

Paste will only copy the data values and not formula, formatting etc. So, you will lose all formatting of the column when you use the Paste button.

Will Paste execute the Compute Outputs for that tool after selecting the data?

If you click on the OK button within Paste, it will copy any data you have selected and try to execute the Compute Outputs button. However, if not all data has been selected or if there is any error in the selection (for example, you have selected columns with different rows), then an error message may be displayed when you click on the OK button.
